it needn't have an idea. first it MUST have good quality, it's plain i think. idea is very good but photos without it aren't worse! other options are specify I don't know do I looking at them. It's only this first WOW
the idea is important, but the quality of how the artist worked it out (for me things like lighting, textures, composition, angle (all in all technical execution) etc.) make a piece unique and worth faving imo.
I voted first impression must be a wow, but it's really more than that. It's complicated. Idea counts really much. And then there is quality, everyone can have brilliant ideas, but the good deviations are the ones that are well worked on(if ur not just really lucky; ). But if I can only pick one, it really matters much if ur awestruck when u see it.
You have to make me say "wow" but if you have a brilliantly innovative idea ie, smart title with an allegorical or symbolic representation in your piece, i would fav it also. if it's just an old idea with a new twist, or if it is well executed old idea, i'd also fav it. i think you do a very nice "wow" factor and your deviations are mostly well executed.
Quality for me. If the picture has a good idea but just a crappy quality I won't fav it. But if the picture has a really good quality and a crappy idea there's still a good chance for it to be faved by me. Of course, it's better if both factors are there.
Undefined, I fav for many reasons, it doesnt have to be a certain artist, as long as I really like it. I normally fav for reason like, the style; because its a really wierd style, really different, the quality: like are the lines really clean and the paint work perfect, the composition, first wow factor, what it tastes like hahaha only joking you cant eat it. It would taste screeny.
Undefined, really meaning there's more than one reason. Here are some reasons why I fav an image, in no particular order:
* imagery/composition (you can include the "wow" factor in this part)
* concept and/or message
* complimentary to my own work
The last one helps me to see that others are doing work similar to my own and that I am not alone in a variety of ways. It's not about ego, but it is about genre and community. In my opinion, it encourages like artists to stick together and support each other.
I could fav a lot of work from the artists I watch -- and usually if I fav a work I will watch/friend the artist out of respect, support, and interest in future work -- but that usually feels a bit extreme, so I'll fav work that really captivates me. Also, once I fav a work, it is unlikely that I will un-fav it later to be replaced by a more captivating work.
Like it was already said, it's a mixed answer. It's mainly the idea and the details. The whole work can be weak but because of the idea or objective/mensage or a simple detail, that's enough for me. In your case is almost always the "WOW" factor.
If the first impression is a wow then I will look closer at the piece. Then I look for quality, concept and how much thought and emotions were put into the piece (not always in that order) Some times its just "I gotta fav!" With no other reason then that.
I tend to favorite a picture if it has good quality, though sometimes I'll just favorite stuff I like or might use later. I do go through every so often and just weed out my favorites. Some works last, others don't.
Theres no simple answer for this.
For me to fav something, its useualy a combination of factors.
Could be anything from the quality of the work, the idea conveyed, the emotion in the work and the emotions it instills in me, or it could simply be something that makes me look twice with "wow".
argh! hard question!!! i think it should be a wow, just to catch the eye, but to be so it must have good idea, and usually this must be innovative and creative. The entire purpose of a first impression wow is to bring in the viewer from afar to stare more carefully at the details. to see the details, there must be good quality. the entire reason for studying details is to draw an emotion from it and give the viewer meaning. so...an all-rounder will be an overall fave, but everything is important. ^^
I can't say what defines what I fave. Sometimes it's just something that 'clicks' with me. It just touches a chord or something. Like =MattCarter's The Artist's Model. That one, I love incredibly, and it's for reasons I can't say.
Other times, I'm on a fanart rampage and everything half-good of my favourite characters gets fave'd.
But mostly it is a simple feeling of something-that I-don't-know-what-it-is.
I think that the first impression must be a "wow" cause this takes into account some of the other points you mentioned. For example the "wow" really comes forth from the idea, quality and sometimes emotions. As mentioned by other people it also depends on the art. But generally if there's a "wow" I don't care what kind of art it is cause it still caused me to look at with more attention.
It has to be well-produced, before I even consider it. But at least one more thing has to be fantastic.
I don't fave people because they "are my favourite artists." That gives them false information. Afterall, reaction tells you if you should improve. To fave evrything would send the message that everything an artist does is perfect, all the time. Which is unlikely.
Everything. For me it is easy to get a watch out of me, you just have to have good art. Getting a favorite out of me is compleltely different, it must be high quality, have a good idea the reads easily, and a subject matter I like. at least. ^^ I think for a long time before diciding to fav.
i generaly fave any where from 30 - 40 percent of devs from my friends and front page but ther are thos certain devs that are just so "wow" there arent enough words to describe now those are truely spectacular. like yours! i love your work!
I usually like innovation, but mostly impact. I like images that take a second to get the bearings, ones that make you think. If you look at an image and have to say, "wait a second...", then I think you really have something.
