My friend from high school made a website for us to use as a forum (homework, random topics and the lot). Reason I bring it up is because I think he did a phenomenal job on the styling. I think its an example of a dark website done well.
I don't care as well as they're done well, and to neither extreme.
Dark websites that truly get in blacks are too annoying and strain my eyes, but medium-dark grays work well. Just as brighter websites that use almost gray whites are nice, but also use some brighter colors do well also.
I would never recommend to use a dark website when showing a portfolio, this of course have it's time when you can break the rule. Dark tones = wrong print colors for the eye.
The best way to use a website when you're using it for a portfolio is to have brighter or best of all, a greyisch tone for natural look.
Dark can be wicked nice sometimes tho if the content is suitable!-

Better for the eyes
