Supremus Lucernarium

It started as a little play with world machine and ended up as a new wallpaper. To avoid confusion: the planet on the right side got hit by an asteroid. The asteroid had enough power to cut a rift into the planet. The image shows the moment when the sun is right behind the planet and shining through this hole. I'm not completely sure about that part because it also could be some kind of crazy explosion. But due to the strong light of the sun, you won't see the hole itself. But I hope my little explanation made it clear :)

The rest shows a peaceful planet with some smaller colonies. The viewer (you) stands on a platform enjoying the sight. And yes... there are birds on this world. Why? Because I made a cool photo and because I like birds :D

Adding the bird really made this piece come alive for me. The sunlight shining from the hole in the planet on the right is an interesting idea. I thought it was something else, before reading the explanation, but it still looked cool, either way. The towers/colonies look good and the overall composition feels right. A very good bit of modern space art.

Wow... I'd love to visit a place like that :)

Can I use this image in a YouTube video? It will be a static background image to one of my songs.

I will, of course, credit you as the artist and provide a link to your deviant art page (or another site if you prefer it.)

Thanks,

Your gallery is so amazing! I've been thinking about trying to draw a scenery with planets looking huge in the background but I haven't started anything yet, because I don't have a slightest idea how I could do that with pencils hehe. I wish I knew how to paint digitally.

Anyways, I really like your pieces of art - you capture the feeling well in them!

I really think the bird detracts from the overall scene- I mean, you've got the exploding planet, the huge space city, and this stupid f'ing bird hogging all our attention.

Amazing and evocative!
I do kinda get the impression that an asteroid wouldn't go completely through a planet without completely destroying it, but maybe the glowing is from the planet's core, shining through the crust (if cores shine)?
Just saying it's not too realistic, but it could be the core the explosion from the astroid itself. Very cool still.

Looks pretty good, but the shadow the eagle casts on the sheet of metal in the foreground seems to be coming from the wrong direction (hint: draw a line from the light source to the top of the eagle's feathers, then continue till you hit the ground). Also the reflection that is produced on the metal-block or whatever it is doesn't look to believable, the metal's texture is too rugged to produced mirror-like reflections.

Hmm, the holey planet is an amazing idea: very surreal, the planet looks glowing :). But I have a problem with the landscape: the far-away edges look too sharp, taking away from the reality of the scene. This seems to be present in a lot of artificial landscape images and it drives me nuts. Blurring the very edges of the mountains might help. Unless - of course - you wanted the unreal-ness of the place.
