Asteriant Prime by taenaron Asteriant Prime by taenaron
Asteriant Prime

:bulletblack: Asteriant Prime is a highly developed planet with giant city-scapes. There also is life on his moons. Due to the climate, which is very cold and windy , there are only a few savage colonies. The image shows the search for a shuttle that crashed on one of them.

:bulletblack: The snow is not falling from heaven but blown away from ground by heavy storm. I used the freedom of art and ignored some issues ;)

:bulletblack: Timeframe: about one month (unregular working-time), mixture of photo, painting and 3D
:bulletblack: Hardware used: Wacom Graphire 4, Canon EOS 350D, 50D
:bulletblack: Software used: Adobe Photoshop, 3dsmax
:bulletblack: Other important things used: coffee, music

This is my entry for the latest exhibition "Reverie" of =theluminarium, which can be found here: TheLuminarium

Well lets jump right in.

Right off the bat, I pick up on the scene you are trying to convey to the viewer. The spotlights and the flare are great indicators of a classic rescue at hand. The hostile terrain with its dark and low-lit approach, really give me a strong feeling for the tension, as if I could almost relate to the people that re stranded. The large planet in the background with its moon(s) provide just the right amount of contrast to keep the viewers attention and add subtle elements to help the viewer figure out the story behind the piece.

Your level of detail is incredible. I can see it in every little corner I look into on this piece. It's great to see someone who goes the extra step in their work. Take for example that faintest of halos around the flare, the tiny building lights, or even the frost on the branches. It's things like this that really push a piece to the next level.

Now setting aside what I just mentioned, lets consider some areas that could use some improvement.
-- Lighting. While I think you have an understanding for lighting that goes beyond the average artist I think that sometime an extra technical eye can really be us use. Your lighting on the large planet and moon are consistent with each other, but its does not seem to translate over to your rescue scene. I can't really place a definitive light source, not that this overly critical, but some viewers may question it.
-- Your rescue craft, while being well portrayed and artistically displayed seems to be a bit cliche in design. We know that a sphere serves as a very utilitarian shaped object, but when used in this picture it seems to steel a bit of your creative spirt. When you approach spacecraft design, be very open minded and be willing to consider odd designs. Since it does not exist, that is your chance to push its design without people rejecting it.
-- Also, the flames coming from behind the craft as propulsion seem a bit far fetched. The craft closest to the ground appears to be going the same speed as the ones far off the ground because its jet looks just as "full-blast" as the others so to speak . Consider maybe changing the flame color to something more futuristic. That orange color seems to much like a combustion engine of today.
-- Another thing that sort of bothers me is the way you aligned the foreground and the middle-ground. In the foreground you have this flat ground with some rocks and tree, but then behind those you have a very tilted landscape that does not seem to match. It kind of looks as though one half of the terrain is just sliding away. This creates a good visual tension but is also a bit distracting.

Other then what is mentioned above, I think the piece overall is great. Keep up the good work.

I just started to eat my breakfast - homemade fancy bread with hot tea. And this particular piece just fits the mood. Epicness, snow, adventure. As if I'm just a small boy again nad watch my favourite comic series.
I divide space art pieces (those really good and strong) into two groups (you might agree or not - it's just my way of seeing things) - those that tell the story and those that invoke emotions. Some do both but this one fits into the first category.
I remember faving this piece and even reading the older critique - there were some parts I agreed with but let's put some more text on the page to cover this depiction.
Strongest part is definitely the depth - massive and majestic world floating above the surface is the first thing that catches my eye but as I aim my sight more closely to the picture I'm realizing it's just the background for the small adventure taking place on one of the moons. The whole scene (well - almost - I'll explain later) covered in volumes of falling snow hurled by strong winds. These snow layers are perfectly supporting the depth and even helping to hide small glitches here and there that would normally be more obvious.
It's really a joy to see all these elements work together - yes, the lighting IS a bit different in the space and on the ground and yes - those ships are cheesy but they just ARE there, the whole scene lives. Realistic colors only finish this complete impression.
Technically there is no big flaw. The only problem I have with the piece is made by that tree in front of the scene. It is the only object that is practically omitted by the falling snow (yes - it is covered by snow but it just doesn't feel like it belongs to the picture). Thus lowering the overall impression a bit.
To finish it - the power of this piece is not in originality or some mind-blowing FXs but in the story and endeavor put in it - every part (aside from the tree :D ) just fits into it - and in that classic atmosphere that will somehow always be that important element separating good pieces from the rest.

My breakfast is over, there is nothing left to say... :tea:

Hmm lovely.
I wonder if both planet's could be near each other, then they could probably transfer heat and save each other :D

sorry it was so brief but you asked wether people had been notified for both deviations, i think due to a lack of comments. That's why i commented quite fast. Don't get me wrong because it's a good piece, just not my taste.

your planets are always detailed and kick ass, and I love the concept, but I'm honestly not a fan of that snow. It looks like a few layers of random dots with a simple motion blur applied. One gets the idea you were going for, but I think it could have been done better.

I like the rocks and trees in the foreground, they give a great sense of depth to the piece and the details that were mentioned before like the frost really set it off.

Great work as always.

wow! what an awesome work!!

i bet the primitive savages would stare with awe and envy at the sight of the main planet before them; whose inhabitants are many many generations more advance than them... it must be an awesome sight to behold!

keep up the good work!!

Great as usual. Love the details, and the general theme.

Only tiny niggle is that on the closest rescue vehicle, you can see the flat straight light at the bottom of it's spotlight, not easy to notice but it's there.

Nitpicking however. Great work. :)

Screw living on THAT planet  though it seems at some point in time, trees have managed to grow there suggesting some warm moments :relax: good explaination for the snow too, I was wondering why it was falling froma clear sky, but your concept could work...same happens with sandstorms :)
